Moving Meetings to a Different Day than Saturday?

This is something that has come up once in a while and might be worth re-addressing. Are Saturdays the best day for meetings?

When the OGDA was a small handful of people, we were able to ascertain what day would be best for the regulars. We were dodging evening class schedules, weekend jobs, and a variety of other factors. As the group grew, trying to do that became less feasible. Now, we have been in the “3rd Saturday” rut for quite a while and people are comfortable with it… to an extent. There are plenty of OGDA members who tend to have weekend plans — especially during the summer. Also, we are on the doorstep of football season which negates Saturdays for many people — especially those coming up from Lincoln.

So the question is, do we consider moving the meetings to a different day of the week? If so, when? Let’s make this an open discussion pretty quick here so we can get something established.

While a different day may be a decent idea I know personally it would be nice if there where more frequent meetings. That way if one misses a meeting in a month they are not S.O.L. till next meeting.

    Hi Dave and Truemobius,

Sorry I missed last meeting but I do agree with Truemobius, in that more meetings may make it easier on some. Also maybe we can have a live stream go on at the same time as meetings so that those who don’t make it can still maybe attend when they can. I would also be willing to chip in like 20 bucks for a projector.

I like the idea of having maybe 2 meetings a month.

Don’t worry about a projector. If we get our new digs, it will come with the territory.

I think having 2 meetings a month would be nice. I haven’t attended a meeting yet because something always seems to come up on the Saturday that the meetings are held. I would have more chances to attend if there were 2 meetings a month.

  5. Dave Mark says:

I believe that is going to be a fairly popular answer.

I would agree that two meetings would be fun, BUT The thing about two meetings is what do we have lined up for each one? Are we going to run dry of stuff to show off or people lined up to Skype us.

The only good side to two days a week which caught my eye in an old forum post you guys talked about as a group, making a game!! With two nights a month available I could possibly see one being made for fun to have made as a group. Two days gives us more time to work with each other, and if some people don’t show up one day but the next, it might work out. One meeting may be more focused on coding, then the other more about the art assets, ect.

I would be really excited to see if we can come together as a group and make a game. I think the group has grown enough and we have more art people with the lots and lots of programmers that are already here!!

I’d love to see two meeting a month! Personally, my schedule is really erratic so the timing of them doesn’t really matter that much to me. More opportunities to come and learn from other devs would be fantastic!

I like the idea of working together on a project. I’m also a BIG fan of game jams. I’ve only been to half a meeting so far (NOT ENOUGH) so I’m not sure how you guys normally do things but I’d have a blast just working alongside other devs for a few hours, playing everyone’s projects, getting feedback and testing and maybe some short-form candid talks?

I just wanted to give a big thank you to OGDA for existing, I didn’t realize how naive I was thinking that I was alone out here. 🙂

  8. I could see two meetings a month being better than one, but more than that doesn’t seem practical or necessary right now. If OGDA meetings do result in a group effort to make a game, then I could see weekly meetings being possible. As for days of the week, Saturday evenings seem best for meetings for my schedule, and for game jams, Friday would be better. Sun-Thur evenings are out for me.
